“We need funding desperately. But we also need to change people's views about women and teaching.”

“At least in Chile, to do this job, you need to study for at least four years. And something that it upsets me is that here, people can literally take a few classes and do his job. So to me that's upsetting. Because I understand that it's good for many reasons, because some people don't have the money to go and study at a university here, and there aren’t enough teachers across the country, so it helps the staffing shortage. But I also think that by giving all these classes for free, and just like, posting about them in the supermarket or on the train, it creates the sense of looking down on the profession even more.”

Sometimes I wish people actually had an idea of how much goes behind a learning provocation, like an activity or setup. It's not just a bunch of random things. There are complex plans behind it that we were talking about for weeks. So if they don't have the knowledge, they may say, ‘Oh, this looks so nicely set up,’ but it's like okay, it's just it's way more than that. I would like to educate people in general about how much goes on behind the scenes of being an early childhood educator.”

“I've always said this and I don't care. I work the hours that they pay me. I am not going to work at home for free. No, I don't care. I don't finish it. I'm not gonna do it. I even if I am just relaxing in my house, it's my time and I need it in order to actually come recharged the next day, but I know that a lot of teachers do so much more. And I think that by doing that, they’re not helping the system to understand that you need more time, you need to get paid better, because you're giving too much for free, and when people give too much, others take advantage. If I do work extra it's gonna be because I want to and it's an hour or 30 minutes, but I'm not gonna be working hours for free.
Because in the field, most of the people are women. Many women are people pleasers. I get it. But yeah, I am not a people pleaser. And I feel proud of it. Because I don't want to be taken advantage of. And I'm straightforward about it. And I tell that to my co-workers like, ‘don't work. It's your vacations. Go enjoy and then come back and then we can talk.’”
